This is a Primitive C1860 or so Small Knife Box in Old Red Paint. It is a great country primitive with square nail and irregularly shaped round nail construction.

The old red milk paint is over and earlier gray/white paint, with the interior painted and the base unpainted. The box has very nice wear and patina and authentic early paint. A piece to one side and a small piece to one corner base went missing long ago. Also there is an old age split to the base from shrinkage of the wood.

The handle is nicely arched and has a small size cut out hand grip. It measures 10 1/2" x 9" x 4" to the side and about 6 1/2" high overall including the handle. The small size and nice red color make this knife box very appealing. And would hold your collection or displays nicely.
