I have always loved these little ladderback chairs made for children during the early 19thC here in New England . This little example has nice attic surface with great flame style finials. The whole thing is peg constructed and hand carved.

An interesting thing to note about these chairs, they were also used flat both front and back as walkers by the children as their means of support. So if you see flattened wear to the back and front supports, as this one has, you know it has been pushed along a floor by a child learning to walk.

The whole thing is very sound (the right front and back foot each has a piece missing during the course of its use). Minor considering its use. The seat is very old brown canvas/sailcloth fabric. The original probably was splint. The height is 21", with 11" deep, 13 1/2" across at the arms, and with the seat depth 10 1/2". The top slat is 9" long and 2 1/2" wide, and the middle slat is 8 3/4" long and 1 3/4" wide.
